What is special about special education?

No matter what their difficulties, every child deserves the same opportunities. Children with learning disabilities have the right to access special education, which allows them to receive a quality education that is tailored to their needs. Every student can achieve their maximum potential and independence through special education.

UNICEF estimates that around 93 million children in the world are living with some kind of disability. More than half of those children don’t attend school, which is a barrier to their right to a better future. Different systems have been developed by countries around the globe to improve child care, education and quality of life. To meet this goal, a variety of laws were passed to address the special needs of children.

The United States defines special education in the United States as follows: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Americans with Disabilities Act of 90 and Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (specifically Section 5004). These laws protect individuals with disabilities from discrimination by defining their rights and protecting them against it. These documents also guarantee the rights of persons with disabilities and alter the education system to ensure equality in education and better living conditions for all.

Public education that is free and suitable

Students with disabilities have the right to access educational services. The laws provide them the opportunity to enjoy the same rights and privileges as students without disabilities. They also set out a framework that describes how instruction should be provided in regular classrooms, in classrooms modified for special needs students, or under special conditions like individualized education or instruction in small classes in a special-needs class. Not only are public schools required to offer special educational conditions, but they also have to pay no extra.

Each child with learning disabilities is given an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). This allows them to address their individual needs.
